Sergio Ramos says Real Madrid team-mate Luka Modric deserves to win FIFA’s 2018 Best Men’s Player award.
The Croatian has been nominated for the accolade along with Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah.
Modric has had a fine year for club and country, first helping Real Madrid to a third successive Champions League title before guiding Croatia to the World Cup final.
Ramos believes his accomplishments should mean he wins the prize ahead of someone who has more marketing or a bigger name, potentially taking a swipe at Ronaldo.
“He is a great friend and a great player,” Ramos said of Modric to ESPN. “He is one of the few players who [if he wins] would make me as happy as if they had given it to me.
“Maybe there are players with more marketing, with a bigger name but Modric deserves that award.”
When asked if his comments were aimed at anyone in particular, such as Ronaldo, he said: “No. But since there is nothing that defines the prize, everything adds up [to Modric winning the award].”
It wouldn’t be the first time Ramos has taken a cheeky dig at his former team-mate, claiming before that Ronaldo “does what he wants” following his move to Juventus.
